Gabriola Museum’s celebration of its new Omoide – Memories, Recollections, Reminiscences exhibit, continues with a book launch and reading with award winning BC author and historian, Masako Fukawa of her new book: Stories of Nikkei Canadians – Resilience in Struggle
Beginning with the story of her own maternal grandfather, Yoshimatsu Shinde (arrived in Canada 1893), who established the Sunrise Sawmill on Gabriola in the early 1920s, Fukawa follows her family and community members through five generations, from hard-luck Japanese village life to the establishment of Steveston—and the place’s reestablishment after the devastations of the war.
Based on personal narratives gathered over many years from documents, photographs, oral interviews, written memoirs, government archives and research trips to Japan, Stories of Nikkei Canadians is an important addition to British Columbia’s and Gabriola Island’s historical record.

Museum Omoide indoor exhibit is open Saturday, May 23, 12- 4 pm & Sunday, May 24, 11-4 pm
The outdoor Omoide exhibits at Pages Inn & Pages Resort & Marina are open all season as of May 23
